Guadalajara

Arrived in Guadalajara early in the afternoon, and after a quick trip to a supermarket to grab some fresh fruit and lunch, I had a much needed snooze! Woke up to eat something, and then back to bed!

Spent most of Sunday updating my blog, but really like the feel of the city. The centro has lots of plazas and old buildings, and there were heaps of families around listening to the free music concerts. Guadalajara has a big arts and music scene, so lots to see and do!

Headed to Tlaquepaque (now a suburb of Guadalajara) today, but missed the stop so got off and strolled around Tonala for a while. Lots of art and craft wholesalers. Jumped back on the bus and managed to get off in the right place this time! Had a torta (sandwich roll) at a local place, but the strangest I´ve had! Normal roll filled with chicken, but then covered in a warm salsa soup! Very messy to eat, but good!

Independencia is packed with galleries selling all kinds of Mexican arts, crafts and furniture. I saw some beautiful things, and even stopped by the international shipping place, but just not worth the hasstle/cost! I went back for a beautiful tin candelabra, but (luckily in hindsight) it was closed for the afternoon siesta!

Was speaking to a Mexican guy at the hostal this morning and when he heard I was heading to merida next he told me there´s a hurricane! Oops! Checked it out this afternoon, and it´s closer to Belize, and no warnings, so it should be fine, but I´ll keep an eye on the government websites!

Planning on exploring the Centro tomorrow, and hurricanes and weather permitting, heading to Merida on Wednesday.

Headed out early this morning while it was still relatively cool to check out the main sights. The beautiful Plaza de Armas has a gorgeous bandstand where they often have live music. As with all the places I´ve been to there is the main Cathedral, though I was disapointed that I couldn´t find the glass case displaying the hands of the matyred Santa Inocencia! I´ve seen so many cathedrals; I needed something to make it a bit more exciting! The Palacio de Gobierno next to the plaza has some impressive murals by Miguel Hidalgo. The Rotondo de los Laureles is surrounded by notable Mexicans, while the Palacio Municipal has a mural by Gabriel Flores. The Plaza de la Liberacion has the Palacio Legislativo and Palacio de Justica facing it, both with...murals! The Museo Regional de Guadalajara was actually really interesting with a complete mammoth skeleton, and some of the cutest pottery I have seen so far - all sorts of stange animals formed into pots, very creative!

I walked along the Plaza Tapatia (very long!) to the Instituto Cultural de Cabanas, but decided not to go in - quite expensive, and I´ve been into so many museums that I´m seeing a lot of similar exhibits. As it was approaching lunchtime I headed to the nearby Mercado Libertad where you can buy just about anything. I had 5 yummy meat tacos with chilli sauce, onions and corriander for 20 pesos ($2) and a big cup of mango. Yum! I waslked to the Plaza de los Mariachis to see some ...mariachis, but there was nothing there. Perhaps too early in the day. Lastly I checked out the Teatro Degollo which has a beautifully painted roof. I suspect that by the end of my trip I wont want to see another cathedral or mural!

I decided to book a flight to Merida tomorrow even though it is raining a bit. Rainy season is starting now, so it may only get worse, and I don´t want to risk missing out on seeing the Yucatan region completely.

Adios from Guadalajara!
